Bhola Grandpa and his wife lived at the western end of our village. A large bokal tree overshadowed their hut. In the bokal tree lived a small troop of monkeys. Bhola Grandpa and his wife did not mind it.
ভোলা দাদু ও তাঁর স্ত্রী আমাদের গ্রামের পশ্চিম প্রান্তে বাস করতেন। একটি বিশাল বোকাল গাছ তাদের কুঁড়েঘরের ওপর ছায়া ফেলত। সেই গাছটিতে বানরদের একটি ছোট দল বাস করত। ভোলা দাদু ও তার স্ত্রী এতে কোনো আপত্তি করতেন না।
One moonlit night, we were returning from a festival. The road was long and foggy. I was riding on the village chowkidar’s shoulders. Suddenly, Bhola Grandpa let out a loud wail. Everyone in our group was startled and stopped immediately. On enquiring, we discovered that Bhola Grandpa had taken his grandson to the festival. He had been holding the boy’s two fingers tightly but failed to notice when they slipped away. Bhola Grandpa kept walking as if nothing had happened. It was only when someone asked him what he was holding that he remembered his grandson and began to wail loudly.

My father selected two sharp-eyed men from our group to accompany Bhola Grandpa back to the festival. Before long, the grandson was found. He had taken a comfortable shelter under a cow’s belly.
আমার বাবা ভোলা দাদুর সঙ্গে উৎসবে ফিরে যাওয়ার জন্য আমাদের দলের দু’জন তীক্ষ্ণ নজরের লোককে বেছে নিয়েছিলেন। বেশি খোঁজাখুঁজি না করেই নাতিকে পাওয়া গিয়েছিল। সে গরুর পেটের নিচে আরামদায়ক আশ্রয় নিয়েছিল।
I recall another amusing incident about Bhola Grandpa, as narrated by my father. It was a rainy afternoon when Bhola Grandpa, brimming with excitement, told my father and his friends that he had witnessed a gang of pirates. They were burying a massive box beneath one of the sand dunes along the seashore near our village. Immediately, my father and his friends began searching for the hidden treasure. Evening turned into night, and moonlight filtered through the clouds. A pack of jackals howled in the distance. It was well past midnight when Bhola Grandpa finally admitted that there was no treasure—it had all been a dream he had during his midday nap.

Once, Bhola Grandpa had an incredible adventure in the Sunderbans. During those times, Royal Bengal tigers roamed freely in the dense forests of the Sunderbans. People were cautious and ensured they traveled only in groups, especially after sunset.

One evening, Bhola Grandpa was on his way back from the weekly market. Suddenly, he heard the growl of a Royal Bengal tiger about five yards behind him. Turning around, he found the tiger’s bright, piercing gaze fixed on his face.

Bhola Grandpa quickly climbed a nearby banyan tree. The tiger roared and circled the tree almost a hundred times. Afterward, it settled down under a bush, keeping its eyes fixed on him. As night fell, the forest became dark and quiet. Bhola Grandpa could hear the tiger striking its tail against the dry leaves. Hours passed.

Dawn broke with the cooing of doves. Bhola Grandpa descended from the tree. A group of men were gathered on a mound a little further away. Bhola Grandpa climbed up the mound and asked the first man he saw for some water to drink. The man had witnessed the tiger waiting below. He was utterly confused. "What is your secret? How did you simply walk past the hungry beast without it doing anything?" he asked Bhola Grandpa.
ঘুঘুর ডাকে ভোর হলো। ভোলা দাদু গাছ থেকে নেমে এলেন। কিছুটা দূরে একটি ঢিবিতে কয়েকজন লোক দাঁড়িয়ে ছিল। ভোলা দাদা ওই ঢিবিতে উঠলেন এবং প্রথম যে ব্যক্তিকে দেখলেন, তাকে জল পান করার জন্য অনুরোধ করলেন। লোকটি বাঘটিকে অপেক্ষা করতে দেখেছিল এবং সে বেশ হতবাক হয়ে গিয়েছিল। “আপনার রহস্য কী? কীভাবে আপনি একটি ক্ষুধার্ত জন্তুর পাশ দিয়ে চলে এলেন, আর এটি কিছুই করেনি?” তিনি ভোলা দাদাকে জিজ্ঞাসা করলেন।
The tiger was stretching its limbs and yawning. Then, Bhola Grandpa remembered the tiger and turned to look at it. He nearly lost his senses in fear. Without a second thought, he ran back home. Half a century later, Bhola Grandpa left us forever one morning at the age of ninety-five. His eighty-year-old wife mourned deeply. With a sigh, she said, "The old man must have forgotten to breathe."
